A Midwinter Night’s Dream
is an annual charity fundraiser held by The Northport High School chapter of the National Honor Society that supports Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease) research. To date they have raised $722,000 for ALS Research and families afflicted with the disease.

Besides raising funds and awareness for ALS, the students have begun their quest to find a cure. In 2006, the student committee hosted a research symposium entitled: “Can nanoscience and technology accelerate our search for a cure for ALS?” This meeting created opportunities for Northport High School students to become active participants of ALS Research in both the clinical and laboratory setting. Due to the success of A Midwinter Night’s Dream, they have been able to support numerous ALS organizations and fund their research.

A Place Called Home (APCH) is a dynamic youth enrichment center founded in 1993. Their mission is to provide at-risk youth with a secure, positive family environment where they can regain hope and belief, earn trust and self respect and learn skills to lead a productive lifestyle free of the gangs, drugs and poverty that surrounds them. A Place Called Home helps inner city youth find their dreams through educational enrichment.

A Window Between Worlds is dedicated to using art to help end domestic violence. Through creative expression, battered women and children recover a sense of renewal and power. Their images of hope, survival and strength educate the public and become “a window between worlds” for survivors taking steps to change their lives. By providing an environment that promotes healing, art workshops help women and children to develop a renewed sense of hope and possibility that profoundly impacts future decisions regarding the direction of their lives, their relationships, and how to stay safe. Art empowers survivors to transform how they view themselves, allowing them to see past the abusive messages they learned from their batterers and rebuild their self-confidence.

AMERICAN BIRD CONSERVANCY

American Bird Conservancy’s (ABC) mission is to conserve wild birds and their habitats throughout the Americas. It is the only U.S.-based group dedicated solely to overcoming the greatest threats facing birds in the Western Hemisphere. A growing human population, consuming ever greater resources, is critically impacting bird populations through habitat destruction, direct mortality from such harmful practices as the unwise use of pesticides, and the introduction of destructive species including domestic cats. ABC believes adequate resources exist to overcome these threats, and that unifying people, organizations, and agencies around common approaches to priority issues is the key to success.

Animal Place, founded in 1989, is a sanctuary for abused and discarded farmed animals. Rescued individuals and indigenous wildlife share 60 acres of forest, meadow, pasture, hills and a small lake. Animal Place is also a humane education center that works to promote cruelty-free lifestyles and veganism. They provide a variety of educational resources for both children and adults that teach kindness and compassion for all creatures, and implement nationwide educational programs such as our Food For Thought, ABC (About Building Compassion) and 5-H campaigns.

The purpose of Camp Kindle is to enhance the overall well-being of children and youth infected with and affected by HIV and AIDS. Camp Kindle’s primary mechanism for achieving its purpose is through camping events held in Nebraska and California. The camps provide HIV infected/affected children and youth residing throughout the Central United States and California with a safe and accepting refuge from the challenges of living with HIV.
