A MIDWINTER NIGHT’S DREAM

A MIDWINTER NIGHT’S DREAM

A Midwinter Night’s Dream
is an annual charity fundraiser held by The Northport High School chapter of the National Honor Society that supports Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease) research. To date they have raised $722,000 for ALS Research and families afflicted with the disease.

Besides raising funds and awareness for ALS, the students have begun their quest to find a cure. In 2006, the student committee hosted a research symposium entitled: “Can nanoscience and technology accelerate our search for a cure for ALS?” This meeting created opportunities for Northport High School students to become active participants of ALS Research in both the clinical and laboratory setting. Due to the success of A Midwinter Night’s Dream, they have been able to support numerous ALS organizations and fund their research.

SO ALL MAY EAT

So All May Eat
was founded in April, 2006 to help eliminate the ever growing problem of hunger. The SAME Cafe is unique in the lack of a set menu as well as set prices. Daily selections are made using fresh, organic ingredients, and funded by the donations of patrons. Instead of a cash register, a donation box is available for one to pay what they felt their meal was worth, or to leave a little more and help out someone less fortunate. If a diner does not have sufficient money to leave, they are encouraged to exchange an hour of service in our restaurant for a full meal voucher. Brad and Libby Birky developed this idea through volunteer work over many years. The two were so touched during this service they decided to do something wonderfully different. Over the course of their years working at food banks and shelters they saw the growing number of people needing assistance: hardworking single moms, the elderly who cannot retire, the educated and the uneducated.
